Saint James Episcopal Church

The Mission of Saint James

Saint James exists to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in worship and ministry,

seeking to include all of God's children, both those in our community of faith and those beyond our doors, while offering the love of Christ.

In 2011, St. James Episcopal Church of Bradley Beach celebrated its Centennial.

Parishioners and well-wishers can now donate and/or pay their pledges online by clicking on the VANCO tab above.

ABOUT

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIEST-IN-CHARGE

 MARCH

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

IN OBSERVANCE OF A HOLY LENT:

March 1st makes it exactly 14 days, excluding Sundays, since we commenced the penitential season of Lent, and we have 26 days, excluding Sundays, before we celebrate the Great Feast of Easter. It is my prayer that each person is making tremendous efforts in the observance of a Holy Lent, “by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word” BCP p. 265.

On Ash Wednesday, February 14th, I visited the Jersey Shore Post-Acute facility, located in Neptune, and imposed ashes on thirty persons, including staff members, and one of our parishioners, Mary Loveless. On Feb. 17th, we performed a charitable act (alms-giving) and distributed donated socks and coats to the homeless in Lakewood. In continuation of our Joint Lenten Series, on Feb. 20th, our affiliated parishes of St. James and St. Michael’s, and the St. Augustine’s Parish in Ashbury Park, commenced a five-week Study, reading Henri Nouwen’s book, “Spiritual Direction – Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith.” Our study continues on March 5th, 12th and 19th, and everyone is invited to join us. The Zoom Meeting ID: 882 7987 4467, Passcode: 043319, and the link:

From Sunday, March 24th (Palm Sunday) through Saturday, March 30th (Holy Saturday), we have planned several spiritual liturgies and worship services at both St. James and St. Michael’s. This year, we will celebrate an Easter Eve service at St. Michael’s, Wall, at 5:00 pm. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.

As a reminder, on Sunday, March 17th, our affiliated parishes will celebrate the third joint worship service at St. James, at 8:00 am (Rite One, without music) and 10:00 am (Rite Two, with music). This will be followed by a coffee hour, using St. Patrick’s as our theme. The liturgy will come from the Irish Anglican Book of Common Prayer and a presentation on the Anglican Church of Ireland will be made by a parishioner of St. Michael’s, Wall.

In closing, let me remind everyone that Easter arrives early this year. On March 31st, Christians around the world will celebrate the great feast of Easter (Resurrection Sunday). Let us continue to observe a Holy Lent so that we may celebrate a glorious Easter! Catholic Archbishop, Fulton J. Sheen reminds us that “Unless there is a Good Friday in your life, there can be no Easter Sunday.” Amen.

Blessings and peace! The Rev. Canon James T. Yarsiah
